CAPTAIN (JUDGE) JOHN CRANE
John Crane was born in Bedford, New York, on the 24th of November 1742. He was the eldest of the twelve children of Zebulon and Sarah Beldon Crane. On March 11, 1764 he married Tamar Carpenter, daughter of John and Hannah Carpenter of New Castle in Westchester County. Five years later, with his wife and two children, he moved to a farm of 250 acres, situated near Lake Mahopac. In 1772 he built the first frame house erected in this part of the County. His house was a public inn where the business of the Town was transacted and meetings where held. John Crane held the office of Justice of the Peace and was an associate Judge in Dutchess County before the County was divided. He became an associate judge of Putnam County after it was formed. When the Revolutionary War began, John Crane took a Captain's Commission under the Provincial Congress of the Province of New York (for a list of other veterans buried in Putnam County's Historic Cemeteries, click here). On the 4th of July following the Declaration of our Independence and the appointment of George Clinton as Governor, he received a Commission from the Governor, which he held throughout the War. He served in the Dutchess Militia, Seventh Regiment under Colonel Ludington.
For a time, General Charles Scott along with his staff made their headquarters at John Crane's Inn. The troops in going from the headquarters at Salem, Westchester County to West Point passed this way and often stayed overnight at the Inn. Captain Crane was known as a true patriot. He helped the Colonial Army by informing George Washington of the activities of the Tories (British supporters) in this area. There were several attempts made by the Tories to either kill or capture Captain Crane but none of them proved successful.
General Washington visited Captain Crane's house and was supposed to have slept there.
Judge Crane and his family were all active in church work, going by horseback from their home near Lake Mahopac to the old log church near Tilly Foster Mines, to attend services. They later aided in the erection and support of the Gilead Presbyterian Church in Carmel.
Captain Crane died at his home in Mahopac on the 7th of June 1827. John Crane was a remarkable man; besides being an unflinching patriot he was also noted for his integrity and superior business capacity in the management of public affairs. He was an indulgent parent of nine children, a kind neighbor, and a firm friend.
