Gilead Burying Ground
Carmel, NY

Current Status: Abandoned.
Description: Bottom step of stile was broken and both gate dogs were damaged by machinery from the neighboring development when rain drainage and a sewer connection were installed under the cemetery parking lot. This work also obliterated the old Horse Pound Road, which ran along the cemetery; across that dirt path, the house of Rev. Elnathan Gregory (later the long-time home of the Craft and Kemp families) still stands, though endangered by age, but its adjacent buildings, including a barn and the pre-1840 meeting house, are long gone. National Register of Historic Places.

There are 29 uncarved or deteriorated stones listed under Unknown for which there are no visible names, dates or other useful information; some are mere shards. The obelisk in Gilead Burying Ground was topped with an urn, which fell off. Rescued by Beverly DeVingo (Schappach) while living at 27 Mechanic Street, it is still stored in the barn there.

Read the 1988 proposal for listing of Gilead burying ground on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, researched and written by Ken Warnecke of Mahopac. Mr. Warmecke prepared this listing of interments, categorized the various stones he found, and prepared a map of the cemetery (layout can be viewed and printed by clicking here).
